Chinese sources commonly consider this to be a vernacular-layer descendant of Old Chinese (OC *kʰraːw, “lower leg”). However, its form, at least in Coastal Min, bears great resemblance to the Tai etymon for leg, e.g. Thai ขา (kǎa, leg) < Proto-Tai *p.qaːᴬ (leg) (Yue-Hashimoto, 1976; Luo, 1992), and Proto-Kam-Sui *kwa (leg). Such similarity may be superficial since this word is reconstructed to have the *au final in Proto-Min (Norman, 1981) and thus there is a disagreement in rime (Schuessler, 2007).
