Most likely a variant reading of that underwent further semantic development in Wu. The use of this exact glyph in place of is more commonly found in Northern Wu.

The exact route through which this morpheme came to have a /d/ initial is disputed, argued either to be a substrate retention or through initial assimilation within the word 銅鈿铜钿. Compare for instance Suzhounese (2zie, “surname”) and (2die, “money (chiefly in compounds)”); as opposed to Jinhuanese (2die, “surname”) and (2die, “money (chiefly in compounds)”). Also confer Wuxinese 銅錢铜钱 (“money; metal coin”) /doŋ ziɪ/ or Danyangnese 銅錢铜钱 (“money; metal coin”) /tɔŋ tɕɪ/.
