Traditionally thought to be derived from etymology 3, but its etymology is disputed. Norman (1984) argues for a derivation from (OC *hljos, “to garrison the frontier”), while Zhengzhang (2014) proposes that it is from (OC *kʰljas, “residence”). Zeng et al. (2024) argue that it descended from (OC *hljaːs, “lodging-house”).
